Sarah's Story

We asked you to submit your stories about attending the conference and we've begun receiving entries. This is Sarah's story.

I was diagnosed at the age of 26 just before my son's 2nd birthday. I felt the lump in my breast but, I kept putting it off getting it checked at because my family was going through so much at the time. My brother who was 31 was just diagnosed with Leukemia and was undergoing treatment. It was the most critical mistake not getting it checked out. When I finally did I was constantly told that I was too young to have breast cancer, but on June 21, 2007 I was diagnosed. I underwent treatment and multiple surgeries and thought I was finally getting better. So I decided to finish getting my college education. Then it came back in June 2009 I was diagnosed with a recurrence in my lymph nodes. When I finished treatment I was told I had received a travel grant to attend the C4YW in Atlanta 2010. I was so excited to go because I had started to talk to many other young ladies on the message boards. The minute I got off the plane I was already meeting young survivors like myself. It was amazing to be able to connect with SO many other women. The information was incredible, the parties were a blast and getting to see Atlanta was unbelievable. I have a support group that I have started in my area so I was able to take back all the information I had received to those other ladies. When I got back from the conference, I didn't know that I was going to be diagnosed again with stage IV Breast Cancer to the Lungs just a few months later. This year I get to attend the conference with my sister, and I get to again reconnect with women I had met but, also get to join another group of Pink Sisters. I'm rooming with my sister and another friend I had made from attending a different conference. I have been able to make connections nationally that I wouldn't have been able to do if it wasn't for YSC or LBBC. I can't thank you enough, it has helped my personal mission of making sure that no other woman diagnosed with breast is left alone on her journey. Thank you so much again for the opportunity.
